The Most Effective Natural Cures on Earth : The Surprising, Unbiased Truth About What Treatments Work and Why

Description

A comprehensive look at natural treatments and healing methods that work. Jonny Bowden takes his practical, knowledgeable, and open-minded approach-the same approach that made The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth so successful-and focuses it on natural cures, revealing the best of alternative medicine for a mainstream audience. Through his personal use, extensive research, and wide-ranging expertise in nutrition and health, Jonny sorts through the myriad home remedies from every discipline and tradition to show which work and how best to use these proven healing techniques. He also explains through approachable and articulate descriptions why they work and on what basis he selected these cures-whether it is patient testimonials or the latest scientific studies to give you peace of mind and the information you need about each treatment. The book explores more than 75 common conditions, including allergies, cancer, high cholesterol, depression, diabetes, hypertension, menopause, and stress.

Description

Since the discovery of superconductivity in 1911 by H. Kamerlingh Onnes, of the order of half a billion dollars has been spent on research directed toward understanding and utiliz- ing this phenomenon. This investment has gained us fundamental understanding in the form of a microscopic theory of superconduc- tivity. Moreover, superconductivity has been transformed from a laboratory curiosity to the basis of some of the most sensitive and accurate measuring devices known, a whole host of other elec- tronic devices, a soon-to-be new international standard for the volt, a prototype generation of superconducting motors and gener- ators, and magnets producing the highest continuous magnetic fields yet produced by man. The promise of more efficient means of power transmission and mass transportation, a new generation of superconducting motors and generators, and computers and other electronic devices with superconducting circuit elements is all too clear. The realization of controlled thermonuclear fusion is perhaps totally dependent upon the creation of enormous magnetic fields over large volumes by some future generation of supercon- ducting magnets. Nevertheless, whether or not the technological promise of superconductivity comes to full flower depends as much, and perhaps more, upon economic and political factors as it does upon new technological and scientific breakthroughs. The basic science of superconductivity and its technological implications were the subject of a short course on "The Science and Technology of Superconductivity" held at Georgetown University, Washington, D. C. , during 13-26 August 1971.

From its first edition, Life has set the standard for experiment-based introductory biology texts. Critical Theory: A Very Short Introduction download pdf, epub

Stephen Eric Bronner: Critical Theory: A Very Short Introduction

Critical Theory: A Very Short Introduction

Description

In its essence, Critical Theory is Western Marxist thought with the emphasis moved from the liberation of the working class to broader issues of individual agency. Critical Theory emerged in the 1920s from the work of the Frankfurt School, the circle of German-Jewish academics who sought to diagnose-and, if at all possible, cure-the ills of society, particularly fascism and capitalism. In this book, Stephen Eric Bronner provides sketches of famous and less famous representatives of the critical tradition (such as George Lukacs and Ernst Bloch, Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin, Herbert Marcuse and Jurgen Habermas) as well as many of its seminal texts and empirical investigations. Though they shared a Marxist bent, the Frankfurt School's scholars came from a variety of fields-philosophy, economics, psychoanalysis, and even music-and they initially sought not only to do interdisciplinary work but also to combine theory with practice, criticism with empirical data. Forced by the rise of Hitler to flee to the United States, by the late 1930s the Frankfurt School left behind the emphasis on empiricism, beginning instead to specialize in philosophical inquiry into the nature of social control, which combined the work of Hegel, Marx, Freud, and Nietzsche. This VSI is ultimately organized around the cluster of concepts and themes that set critical theory apart from its more traditional philosophical competitors. Bronner explains and discusses concepts such as method and agency, alienation and reification, the culture industry and repressive tolerance, non-identity and utopia. He argues for the introduction of new categories and perspectives for illuminating the obstacles to progressive change and focusing upon hidden transformative possibilities. Only a critique of critical theory can render it salient for a new age. That is precisely what this very short introduction seeks to provide. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Sarbanes-Oxley requires a faster delivery of the 10-Q, so everyone is scrambling to find ways to release financial information and statements sooner. Also, this is a major efficiency issue for the accounting department, which can get bogged down in financials issuance for weeks. This book will provide flowcharts and checklists to help avoid delays and bring accounting department closing procedures current, so companies can close the financials quickly enough to issue statements for the new requirements. A magisterial history of the greatest and most terrible event in history, from one of the finest historians of the Second World War. A book which shows the impact of war upon hundreds of millions of people around the world- soldiers, sailors and airmen; housewives, farm workers and children. Reflecting Max Hastings's thirty-five years of research on World War II, All Hell Let Loose describes the course of events, but focuses chiefly upon human experience, which varied immensely from campaign to campaign, continent to continent. The author emphasises the Russian front, where more than 90% of all German soldiers who perished met their fate. He argues that, while Hitler's army often fought its battles Critical Theory: A Very Short Introduction free epub brilliantly well, the Nazis conducted their war effort with 'stunning incompetence'. He suggests that the Royal Navy and US Navy were their countries' outstanding fighting services, while the industrial contribution of the United States was much more important to allied victory than that of the US Army.

Will Randall: Indian Summer

Indian Summer

Description

While attempting to teach at an inner London comprehensive Will Randall is taken up by an elderly German woman who asks him to accompany her to India. Nothing ventured, he agrees and so begins a wonderful life-changing adventure. Set down in Puna (3 hours from Bombay) he begins work teaching English at a slum school. Most of the children are orphans or parentless (one lost his parents four years previously when his mother had let go of his hand at a railway station and he 'd boarded the wrong train ). When zamidars -slum barons - arrive and threaten to pull down the school Randall has to put on a fund-raising performance of the Indian epic The Ramayana in order to help the slum dwellers buy their own land. Meanwhile he's also been spotted by a Bollywood Director who persuades him to take the role of leading man in his new film. Will Randall is 'the teacher who travels' and, as in SOLOMON TIME, this is a funny and heart-warming account of how one man's enthusiasm and old-fashioned desire to do good have helped to preserve a community.

It's science project time in Ms. Adolf's class. This is good news and bad news for Hank-he loves science, but he hates the report part. So Hank turns to TV to take his mind off things. But when the program directory scrolls by too quickly for Hank to know what's on, he decides to take apart the cable box to try to slow down the crawl. Great! Now Hank has found the perfect science project! But what he wasn't counting on was his sister's pet iguana laying eighteen eggs in the disassembled cable box. How is Hank going to get out of this one? Dear Reader, The idea of bittersweet is changing the way I live, unraveling and re-weaving the way I understand life. Bittersweet is the idea that in all things there is both something broken and something beautiful, that there is a moment of lightness on even the darkest of nights, a shadow of hope in every heartbreak, and that rejoicing is no less rich even when it contains a splinter of sadness. It s the practice of believing that we really do need both the bitter and the sweet, and that a life of nothing but sweetness rots both your teeth and your soul. Bitter is what makes us strong, what forces us to push through, what helps us earn the lines on our faces and the calluses on our hands. Sweet is nice enough, but bittersweet is beautiful, nuanced, full of depth and complexity. Bittersweet is courageous, gutsy, audacious, earthy. "This is what I ve come to believe about change: it s good, in the way that childbirth is good, and heartbreak is good, and failure is good. By that I mean that it s incredibly painful, exponentially more so if you fight it, and also that it has the potential to open you up, to open life up, to deliver you right into the palm of God s hand, which is Indian Summer download ebook pdf where you wanted to be all long, except that you were too busy pushing and pulling your life into exactly what you thought it should be. I ve learned the hard way that change is one of God s greatest gifts, and most useful tools. Change can push us, pull us, rebuke and remake us. It can show us who we ve become, in the worst ways, and also in the best ways. I ve learned that it s not something to run away from, as though we could, and that in many cases, change is a function of God s graciousness, not life s cruelty. Niequist, a keen observer of life with a lyrical voice, writes with the characteristic warmth and honesty of a dear friend: always engaging, sometimes challenging, but always with a kind heart. You will find Bittersweet savory reading, indeed. This is the work I m doing now, and the work I invite you into: when life is sweet, say thank you, and celebrate. And when life is bitter, say thank you, and grow. "

Welcome to Bordertown: New Stories and Poems of the Borderlands

Description

Bordertown: a city on the border between our human world and the elfin realm. Runaway teens come from both sides of the border to find adventure, to find themselves. Elves play in rock bands and race down the street on spell-powered motorbikes. Human kids recreate themselves in the squats and clubs and artists' studios of Soho. Terri Windling's original Bordertown series was the forerunner of today's urban fantasy, introducing authors that included Charles de Lint, Will Shetterly, Emma Bull, and Ellen Kushner. In this volume of all-new work (including a 15-page graphic story), the original writers are now joined by the generation that grew up dreaming of Bordertown, including acclaimed authors Holly Black, Cassandra Clare, Cory Doctorow, Neil Gaiman, Catherynne M. Valente, and many more. They all meet here on the streets of Bordertown in more than twenty new interconnected songs, poems, and stories. "From the Hardcover edition."

Here's a great introduction to Manhattan for young people. Illustrations of 25 Big Apple sites with great appeal to grade-school-age children depict the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, the ships at South Street Seaport, mummies at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and dinosaurs at the American Museum of Natural History, as well as: Grand Central Station; Chinatown; Central Park Zoo; Brooklyn Bridge; American The Italian Wine Lover's Bible: Never Let a Wine Snob Make You Feel Small download ebook Indian Museum; Madison Square Garden; Empire State Building; Wall Street and Trinity Church; Times Square; United Nations; and eleven other popular New York City attractions. An informative caption accompanies each carefully rendered illustration." 'They are not for you but for a later age!' Ludwig van Beethoven, on the Opus 59 quartets Beethoven's sixteen string quartets are some of the most extraordinary and challenging pieces of music ever written. They have inspired artists of all kinds - not only musicians - and have been subject to endless reinterpretation. What does it feel like to be a musician taking on these iconic works? And how do the four string players who make up a quartet interact, both musically and personally? The Takacs is one of the world's pre-eminent string quartets. Performances of Beethoven have shaped their work together for over forty years. Using the history of both the Takacs Quartet and the Beethoven quartets as the backbone to his story, Edward Dusinberre, first violinist of the Takacs since 1993, recounts the exhilarating challenge of tackling these pieces. Beethoven for a Later Age takes the reader inside the daily life of a quartet, vividly showing the necessary creative tension between individual and group expression and how four people can enjoy making music together over a long period of time.

The Italian Wine Lover's Bible: Never Let a Wine Snob Make You Feel Small

Description

THE ITALIAN WINE LOVER'S BIBLE aims to soothe those humble and skittish beginner wine aficionados wanting to understand Italian wine. How does one comprehend a land growing 2,000 varietal wines in one million vineyards? The first rule for those on bended knee with a wish to know why they adore the wines of Italy is: Italy is a country of red wines. Much white is made but it is rarely important. Italy (the Roman Empire really) is responsible for the dissemination of the great varietals throughout the modern world. Rome, as it created empire, brought cuttings from the Greeks. The Greeks had brought cuttings from Mesopotamia. The wine drinkers of the world are the beneficiaries. Today Italy is the greatest volume producer of wine in the world. (From vintage to vintage, France can be number one.) Cheap and dear, outrageous in complex beauties or simple pleasures, the wines of Italy are exported everywhere. This book aims to elucidate for ardent emerging oenophiles (literally lovers of wine) the regions responsible for the greatest Italian reds and the producers who year after year display artistic devotion to the grapes of their vineyards. The international wine world accords Bordeaux Cabernet Sauvignon based wines as the highest expression that grapes can attain. I will argue that this is wrong. That this is an opinion foisted on us by the Brits who were the great importers, and subsequently the exporters of what they call 'claret'-the reds of the Bordeaux region. Google and Amazon are shining examples of 'first in their field take over the field'. So too did Bordeaux wines seize the high ground in greatness. The five Premier Cru Classe (First Growths) today attain the highest prices vintage after vintage. I will argue that several red varietals from several regions share the lofty title: Best in the World. Cabernet Sauvignon (blended with Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec-the classic Bordeaux blend) will forever share the pantheon of great reds. But so too will Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Corvina and Aglianico of Italy. And Pinot Noir from Burgundy and wherever. And Syrah and Grenache. These wines all mature into elegant, brilliant wines. The proof of which is the best? This is the task of oenophiles everywhere: to sort out through tastings of all the various vintages with friends and family. A wonderful change-that quickly rocked the wine world--began in Tuscany in the early 1970s. The Marchese Piero Antinori blended Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese, the ubiquitous grape of Tuscany. This inroad into greatness happened at about the same time that Napa Valley was shocking wine lovers in the USA. Antinori began to produce Tignanello--80% Sangiovese with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon--and Solaia--80%Cabernet Sauvignon with 20% Sangiovese. Antinori's work marked the ascension of Italian wine from cheap and ubiquitous to great...and ubiquitous. THE ITALIAN WINE LOVER'S BIBLE starts its story from the early 1970s and explores Italy's path to greatness. The great regions and producers are explored. And so too are the varietals--both those native to Italy and those non-native varietals latterly introduced. And, yes, Italy learned from France and New World winemakers modern viticultural planting techniques and vinification inroads. Italy also began importing 55-gallon oak barrels for aging. A star was being born."

Chosen Men: Military Skirmish Games in the Napoleonic Wars

Description

Chosen Men is a set of fast-action skirmish rules detailing the bloody skirmishes between light troops in the Napoleonic Wars. The primary focus of the game is on soldiers and NCOs in light 'flank' companies, as they scout ahead of larger forces and take part in man-to-man actions against enemy skirmishers. Although the game allows for the formation of accurately sized companies of light infantry and cavalry if you wish, these formations are broken down into small groups of up to a dozen men. For the most part, officers are not swashbuckling super-heroes, but staunch commanders who rally and direct their men to achieve the battlefield objectives. Although the game uses an alternating action turn sequence, officers can use their influence on multiple units at the same time in an effort to steal the initiative. With all rolls resolved using standard 6-sided dice, this game combines a classic wargaming feel with modern wargame mechanics.
